VDOT Nottoway River
The Nottoway river bridge replacement project was completed in July of 2022. This project consisted of replacing two identical bridges a half mile apart with very aggressive schedules. Work on both bridges could not begin until January 1st of each year and had to be complete by September to allow the road to be open for the cotton harvest. Also a fish moratorium was in place from February 15th until May restricting work in the water. Aside from the schedule constraints, the work itself was challenging. A trestle had to be installed at both bridges for access and a large 300 ton crane had to be used to drive 36’’ precast cylinder piles using a D-160 hammer weighing in at 140,000 lbs. Against these challenges and others the project was completed early earning an early completion incentive.
