Plum Island Wastewater Treatment Plant Improvements Project Wins Build America Award

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (April 30, 2021) – Crowder Construction Company and Charleston Water System was recently awarded the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) Build America Award for the Plum Island Wastewater Treatment Plant – Phase III Capital Improvements project. The $62 million project for Charleston Water System won the 2021 Construction Risk Partners Build America Award for upgrades that will ensure reliability of critical infrastructure and protection of public health and the environment by continuing to release clean water into the Charleston Harbor.

“We are proud of our work on this project and the widespread benefits it provides to the Charleston community,” said B.J. Christman, Vice President and Division Manager for Crowder’s Civil & Environmental Divisions. “The improvements ensure reliability and sustainability of critical infrastructure, and support Charleston Water in its mission to protect public health and the environment of its service area.”

The CMAR project included major modifications to the 36 MGD Plum Island plant. Crowder began the project in March 2016, working with design firm Hazen and Sawyer. The company self-performed 70% of the work at the site with its own skilled craft workforce. Specialized trades included electrical, all equipment installations, above/underground piping, concrete finishing and forming, and open excavations.

The Plum Island Wastewater Treatment Plant, first built in 1968, treats all wastewater collected in the Charleston Water service area as well as several outlying towns. Wastewater moves through a system of 800 miles of sewers, boosted by more than 200 pumping stations. The modifications and upgrades will enable the plant to meet more stringent environmental standards as well as accommodate a planned future buildout flow to 54 MGD.

The award will be presented during the AGC’s Annual Convention at the Construction Risk Partners Build America Awards Breakfast on September 22, 2021 in Orlando, Florida. The Build America Awards honor the nation’s most impressive construction projects.
