Crowder's Cape Fear Heat Exchanger Project Wins DBIA-SE Award

12.11.2018

Crowder's Cape Fear Heat Exchanger Replacement project at the Southside Wastewater Treatment Plant in Wilmington, NC was awarded “Best Rehabilitation Project” by DBIA-Southeast. Crowder partnered with Hazen and Sawyer to deliver the first ever design-build project for Cape Fear Public Utility Authority (CFPUA). The Southside WWTP was originally constructed in 1972 and expanded in 1986, and many of the mechanical components had reached the end of their useful life. This rehabilitation project involved replacing the existing digester heat exchanger and associated feed pump.

Collaboration among the design-build team, CFPUA, and plant staff ensured project success and direction. The project was substantially completed 30 days early which limited downtime of the digesters, thereby getting the plant back in full operation ahead of schedule. The success of this project set the stage and has become a model for future design‐build procurement not only for CFPUA, but also for other municipalities and authorities in the area.
